Justin Barba

MisCon 29 MisCon Staff

Justin Barba came to his first MisCon as a freshman in high school in 1990 (it was MisCon 5!). It was held at what is now the Days Inn, just a block from MisCon 30. Little did he know that years later he would end up agreeing to help work the hospitality room for MisCon 20. Then he took on managing the writer's workshop. Then MisCon Operations. Then Vice Chair, then Chair. Now he spends all his time planning MisCon, trying to be a good husband, and raising his funny daughter.

  • panel Sat 10:00 - 10:50 AM, Downton Abbey: a Bygone Era, Thunderdome Right (Big Room Right)
Moderator: Krista Wallace; Panelists: Justin Barba, Brenda Carre, Rhiannon Held, Krista Wallace

As far as we know, Downton isnít science fiction, fantasy, or horror, but it reminds us of an era before the Wasteland. Its dialogue and characters are examples of great storytelling, and its setting is a staple among so many genre stories that we just need to discuss it. Spoiler alert! We wonít hold back, so everything in the show is on the table.

In this panel, you'll get a first-hand look at how editors react when they read the opening page of your submission. Submit the first page of your story or book to be randomly read aloud. Our panelists will stop the reader when they would stop reading the submission and tell you why. Submissions will be handed in at the beginning of the panel.
