MisCon 30 Attending Professional
Meradeth's never been a big fan of talking about herself, but if you really want to know, here are some random tidbits about her:
She's a Northern California girl. And now is braving the cold winters in Montana.
When she's not writing, she's sequencing dead people's DNA.
She's also an anthropology professor and loves getting people interested in studying humans.
If she could have a super-power, it would totally be flying. Which is a little strange, because she's terrified of heights.
Scheduled Panels and Presentations:
Key: =On a Panel =Moderating =GMing
Sat 11:00 - 11:50 AM, The Role of Stories, Gallatin
Panelists: Carol Berg, Rhiannon Held, Meradeth Houston
Every culture might interpret the same story in vastly different ways (Ex: Hamlet). Unique cultures can also independently create startlingly similar stories. What is it about stories that make them such an entrenched part of human culture? Why is the morality tale the preferred way to instruct youth in societal norms? Is it possible that stories are the key to understanding what it means to be human?
Sat Noon - 12:50 PM, Elevate Your Dialogue, Jefferson
Moderator: Meradeth Houston; Panelists: Matt Buscemi, Deby Fredericks, Meradeth Houston, Fiona Jallings (dreamingfifi)
This isn't your standard dialogue panel! We know how to differentiate description associated with characters (ie: purple for Marie) but how do you truly differentiate your characters through dialogue? Is it a matter of syntax, accents, or phrasing? How do you even begin to tie different speech patterns to certain characters? This panel will be a discussion of dialects, phrases, and stylizations that can lend credibility to characterizations in fiction, RPGs, or larping.
Sat 1:00 - 1:50 PM, Self-Published Writers Roundtable, Gallatin
Moderator: Brian Rathbone; Panelists: Jason A. Holt, Meradeth Houston, Brian Rathbone, April White
MisCon is lucky to host several outstanding self-published authors. Join many of them for an informal discussion about all things self-publishing.
