Meradeth Houston

MisCon 31 Attending Professional

Meradeth's never been a big fan of talking about herself, but if you really want to know, here are some random tidbits about her:

She's a Northern California girl. And now is braving the cold winters in Montana.

When she's not writing, she's sequencing dead people's DNA.

She's also an anthropology professor and loves getting people interested in studying humans.

If she could have a super-power, it would totally be flying. Which is a little strange, because she's terrified of heights.

The radioactive slag has been cleaned, the viro-mutants have been killed or restored to human status, and the re-building of New Hong Kong Orbital University has begun (by zombies, rumor has it). How do you write this? Do we live in beautiful outdoor gardens or in the protection of the white ceramic walls of New Safe City? What are the sights, sounds, scents and textures of Utopia?

  • panel Mon 10:00 - 10:50 AM, Simply Human, Ballroom C
Panelists: C.J. Cherryh, Jane Fancher, Manny Frishberg, Hugh S. Gregory, Meradeth Houston

Robots run a great deal of our world, making our cars, food, medical equipment; robots even make our robots. What will there be for humans to do in the New Age of Humanity? Films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey and Blade Runner raise questions about machine sapience and sentience. Will technicians have to swear an e-version of the Hippocratic Oath? What will be the ethics of dealing with old and/or non-functioning computers?
