Alyson Peterson

MisCon 31 Panel Volunteer

Alyson Peterson lives in a mountainside gully—of all places—in northern Utah with her neurotic, shed-tastic dog, two ninja kids, and superhero husband. She spends her time studying martial arts, weapons and reads...a LOT. She teaches Story Structure and Character Development to teens across the country and was an adjunct professor at BYU. She has three traditionally published books and feels she's just begun her writing journey!

  • panel Sat 3:00 - 3:50 PM, Alien Speak, Gallatin
Panelists: Fiona Jallings (dreamingfifi), Frog Jones, Alyson Peterson

What kind of language will an alien speak? Probably nothing you can speak without an abacus, a swimming pool, and a chamber choir. As different as human languages can be from each other, there are certain things they all do. What if they didn't?

  • Break Sat 3:50 - Sun 1:00
  • panel Sun 1:00 - 1:50 PM, Building Immersive Worlds, Monster Tent (1)
Panelists: Daniel Bensen, Larry Bonham, Alyson Peterson, Peter Wacks (pjwacks)

We know an immersive, deep world when we see it. Everything just fits together, in casual, unforced fashion. Sometimes the best researched and written worlds aren't immersive. Heinlein claims it's all about same until proven otherwise, but other authors insist it is the other way around. Our authors will discuss classic world building techniques, mistakes and go-to solutions.

  • panel Sun 2:00 - 2:50 PM, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Dragon Pavilion (1)
Panelists: Kyle Elliott (Big Kyle), Guy Pace, Alyson Peterson

The Force Awakens: A worthy successor or a colossal failure to the trilogy that spawned a new era in science fiction and fantasy? It is possible that The Force Awakens has redefined the genre -- again?
    Panelists: Guy Pace

  • Break Sun 2:50 - Sun 4:00
  • panel Sun 4:00 - 4:50 PM, Don't Whip the Horse: Mental Health and Writing, Jefferson
Panelists: Ann Gimpel, Frog Jones, Alyson Peterson, Joyce Reynolds-Ward, D.L Solum

You can argue that to be a writer is to have some form a neurosis, but in all seriousness, writers can suffer from a number of mental health issues: depression, anxiety, imposter syndrome, among others. We endure rejection after rejection, we work in isolation, which can lead to serious mental health problems. Let's discuss some of these problems and the resources to help you overcome them.

  • Break Sun 4:50 - Mon 10:00
  • moderator Mon 10:00 - 10:50 AM, Voice in SF/F, Dragon Pavilion (1)
Moderator: Alyson Peterson; Panelists: David Boop, Claire Eddy, Lane Heymont, Alyson Peterson, Dean Wells

Sometimes writers intent on world building spend less time on finding their main character's voice. Let's discuss how you describe your new worlds in the main character's, or the narrator's, unique voice. Authors who are particularly good at this are Rick Riordan, JK Rowling, select Brandon Sanderson books, Anne McCaffry, Brian Jacques, to name a few.

  • Break Mon 10:50 - Mon Noon
  • panel Mon Noon - 12:50 PM, Writing Big Battles and Single Combat, Madison
Panelists: Larry Bonham, L.F. Patten (Laurey), Alyson Peterson, D.L Solum

Let's talk about writing battles battles versus personal combat, the differences and similarities. How do you learn all this stuff?
