MisCon 32 Panel Volunteer
As a quiet, introverted child, I've always loved building and theorizing about alternate worlds, far away from the pushy and aggressive real world. Early on, an aptitude for clothing and clothing design showed up, as I would design clothing for the universes I came up with. But, stronger than the aspects of design and engineering, I was fascinated with language. I was doing linguistic analyses on the communication systems around me - even in Kindergarten. I mainly focused on orthographic systems (because the adults around me were really keen on my learning how to read and write) and phonology, what the orthographic systems were supposed to be representing. Mostly, I noticed that they didn't match up at all. I hated spelling because people would tell me to "sound it out", when one letter could stand for six or more different sounds! Needless to say, when I discovered Tolkien's linguistically organized Tengwar, I was enchanted.
Now I'm in college, and I'm reaching beyond the limited amount of knowledge I could gain from self-taught linguistics. My fascination with Tolkien's work has spread to many long years intensely studying Tolkien's work, which lead to a website with thousands of Elvish names and phrases, and a Sindarin textbook and class.
As for sewing, it has remained my hobby. I sew costume commissions for people, and love getting dressed up in costumes I've sewn. It's almost like meditation, in a way.
Elvish and Cosplay. That is the life for me!
