Author of "A Fan's Guide to Neo-Sindarin," linguist Fiona Jallings has been teaching, translating, and obsessing over Tolkien's Elven languages for the past 16 years.

As a quiet, introverted child, I've always loved building and theorizing about alternate worlds, far away from the pushy and aggressive real world. Early on, I was fascinated with language. I was doing linguistic analyses on the communication systems around me - even in Kindergarten. I mainly focused on orthographic systems (because the adults around me were really keen on my learning how to read and write) and phonology, what the orthographic systems were supposed to be representing. Mostly, I noticed that they didn't match up at all. I hated spelling because people would tell me to "sound it out", when one letter could stand for six or more different sounds! Needless to say, when I discovered Tolkien's linguistically organized Tengwar, I was enchanted.

Now I've got a degree in Linguistics. My fascination with Tolkien's work has spread to many long years intensely studying it, which lead to a website with thousands of Elvish names and phrases, and a Sindarin textbook and class.
