Missoula's Science Fiction & Fantasy Convention

MisCon 38: the Dark Forest, May 24 - 27, 2024 Missoula, Montana

4 days of all things horror, sci-fi...

MisCon 28

All things fantasy, sci-fi and horror will fill Ruby's Inn for the next four days as MisCon returns for the 28th year.

The city's annual convention, which is designed to celebrate the literacy and arts aspects of those genres, is eclectic as ever.

Headlining guests this year include Steven Erikson, author of "Malazan Book of the Fallen" series, which has helped land him on the New York Times best-seller list.

In the arts arena, award-winning fantasy and sci-fi illustrator Todd Lockwood is visiting. He helped create the instantly recognizable look for Dungeons and Dragons games and books, Magic: The Gathering trading cards, and jacket art for novelists like Terry Brooks.

Peter Kent, meanwhile, served as Arnold Schwarzenegger's stunt man during his ’80s and ’90s action-hero peak, including the motorcycle scenes in the first two "Terminator" movies. He also took hits for the future governor of California in "Predator," "Total Recall," and "Commando."

For aspiring writers, Elizabeth Wollheim and Sheila Gilbert from DAW Books, a long-running independent publisher, will be on-hand participating in numerous workshops.

Panels and workshops abound for writers and filmmakers ("Making Independent Films," "How Technology in Stories Becomes a Reality"). Others are just fun and obscure ("The Devolution of American Horror Films").

There's an art show and silent auction; plenty of tabletop gaming; costume contests; and activities to keep the kids occupied (make a comic book, or a tin-foil hat).

To view the complete schedule, which could fill a comic book on its own, go to www.miscon.org. Cost is $40 for four-day pass for adults; $15 for children's four-day passes; day passes also are available.
