MisCon 37: Monster Mash-upMisCons Past
Looks like we might need a few more monster hunters around here, just to be on the safe side.
Over the years, MisCon has been plagued by zombies, became a ruined wasteland, ascended to the future, lost all its heroes, and levelled up. It’s been filled with doors to many places and times. Once it became a fairy tale that attracted none other than George R.R. Martin, one of the greatest wizards of our age.
This year the monsters are coming.
We didn't know what to make of it at first, but they've been reserving rooms, signing up to run games, sit on panels, and want to join the Costume Parade.
Jinkies!
We're talking mummies, werewolves, homunculi, goblins, insurance adjusters, beholders, ogres, you name it.
Monsters of every kind.
A number of them seem to think we're opening some kind of bath house for spirits, and one especially creepy doctor offered to run a panel on the psychology of evil. He even said he'd share some fava beans and a nice chianti with the audience.
I know that sounds great and all, but you're probably asking yourself the same question we did: why would a bunch of monsters want to attend MisCon?
As usual, our seers, scientists, and sages scoured the multiverse for answers. It turns out it's simple:
Guillermo, a vampire's familiar from Staten Island, invited them.
He heard MisCon is filled with a bunch of fun humans, including LARPers, who accept all kinds of weirdos as long as they behave themselves and follow the code of conduct.
So he sent invitations to monsters everywhere, telling them MisCon 37 would be just like Hotel Transylvania but in Montana.
I won't bore you with the details of THE CONTRACT, but we've all agreed to treat each other with respect. There will be no beguiling, bloodsucking, enchanting, maiming, dismembering, etc of other attendees.
Even the Tokyo Ghouls promised not to eat anyone, and Skeletor swears he'll be on his best behavior, although he also insists he's not a monster.
This year, let's talk about all types of monsters, from the tentacled-cat who lives under your bed, to those pesky blue bokoblins, to everyone's favorite monster, King Joffrey.
While you work on costumes, panel ideas, and game scenarios, try to avoid Colin Robinson and the other energy vampires. Think about monstrous acts, things that lurk in the shadows, and ponder why monsters, even the human variety, fascinate us. What makes a monster a monster?
Come to MisCon 37: Monster Mash-Up and maybe you’ll find out.
–
Will you be an elven vampire or a gelatinous cube? How about Cousin It? How about Shaggy or Velma? The Witcher? Bela Lugosi's Dracula? Nosferatu?
Watch Monsters Inc, What We Do in the Shadows, Dracula, Full Metal Alchemist (Brotherhood, of course), Stranger Things, American Horror Story, Demon Slayer, Game of Thrones, Lost Boys, and read some horror to get in the mood. There are monsters in just about every story, so it shouldn't be hard.
Even though we’re going monster-themed this year, you can still put on Mandalorian armor, become a paladin, a cyberpunk, or the Staypuft Marshmallow man. Or don't wear any costume at all (I mean, wear clothes, but regardless of what you look like, let your geek flag fly).
Oh, and please leave your Death Note at home.
