MisCon 38 Gaming Schedule by Game System

We have many systems represented each year at MisCon. Here is a schedule of games being run at MisCon 38, sorted by the Game System. This list is updated on the first Saturday of each month, until March, when it will be updated every Saturday.

If you want to run a game at MisCon 38, please sign up starting in January to get your game scheduled.

Alien RPG

The ALIEN tabletop roleplaying game is a beautifully illustrated 392-page full-color hardcover book, both presenting the world of ALIEN in the year 2183 and a fast and effective ruleset designed specifically to enhance the ALIEN experience. The game can be played in two distinct game modes:

Cinematic play is based on pre-made scenarios that emulate the dramatic arc of an ALIEN film. Designed to be played in a single session, this game mode emphasizes high stakes and fast and brutal play. You are not all expected to survive.

Campaign play is designed for longer continuous play with the same cast of player characters over many game sessions, letting you explore the ALIEN universe freely, sandbox style.

The rules of the game are based on the acclaimed Year Zero Engine, used in award-winning games such as Tales from the Loop and Mutant: Year Zero, but adapted and further developed to fully support and enhance the core themes of ALIEN: horror and action in the cold darkness of space.

Apiary

In a far-distant future, humans no longer inhabit Earth. The cause of their disappearance (or perhaps their demise) is unknown, but their absence left a void ready to be filled by another sentient species.

Over the span of untold generations, one species of the humble honeybee evolved to fill that void. They grew in size and intelligence to become a highly advanced society. They call themselves Mellifera, and they have made substantial technological advances in addition to the technology they adapted from human ruins, up to and including space travel.

In Apiary, each player controls 1 of 20 unique factions. Your faction starts the game with a hive, a few resources, and worker bees. A worker-placement, hivebuilding challenge awaits you: explore planets, gather resources, develop technologies, and create carvings to demonstrate your faction’s strengths (measured in victory points) over one year’s Flow. However, the Dearth quickly approaches, and your workers can only take a few actions–with benefits increasing relative to worker strength, culminating in powerful strength-4 bonuses–before they must hibernate!

If you enjoy Teotihuacan, Honey Buzz, Tzolk’in, and/or Euphoria, we’re excited for you to play Apiary!

Blood on the Clocktower

Blood on the Clocktower is a game of murder and mystery, lies and logic, deduction and deception for five-to-twenty courageous players and one devious storyteller.

A social game played in person, seated in a circle, each player receives either a ‘good’ or ‘evil’ token with their unique character on it. Good players share information to solve the mystery whilst evil players lie about who they are and what they know. The good team wins if they can piece together their knowledge, trust each other, and execute the demon. The evil team wins if the demon can sow distrust, evade detection, and wipe out the village.

Dread

Dread uses a very simple system. When you try to take a challenging action pull one or more Jenga blocks, as dictated by the GM. If you pull and succeed you succeed in your action. If you knock the tower over your player character dies and is out of the game - or if there is no sensible narrative way for that to happen (for instance a knock over by spilling your drink) they are the walking dead, unable to pull any more blocks and die at the next convenient opportunity.

Forest Shuffle

In Forest Shuffle, players compete to gather the most valuable trees, then attract species to these trees, thus creating an ecologically balanced habitat for flora and fauna.

To start, each player has six cards in hand, with cards depicting either a particular type of tree or two forest dwellers (animal, plant, mushroom, etc.), with these latter cards being divided in half, whether vertically or horizontally, with one dweller in each card half.

On a turn, either draw two cards — whether face down from the deck or face up from the clearing — and add them to your hand, or play a card from your hand by paying the cost, then putting it into play.

During set-up, three winter cards were placed into the bottom third of the deck. When the third winter card is drawn, the game ends immediately, then players tally their points based on the trees and dwellers in their forest. Whoever scores the most points wins.

Forest Shuffle is the first in a line of Lookout games sporting the Lookout Greenline label, produced on FSC certified paper and avoiding plastic completely.

Pocket Monster of the Week

Early on in the life cycle of ‘Critical Ditto’, Tom, Ali, David and Stew came to the conclusion that existing Pokémon Tabletop Roleplay systems, whilst fantastic in their own right, were not suitable for the heavy narrative/improv story they were trying to tell.

As a result, the boys decided to hack Michael Sands iconic Powered by the Apocalypse RPG; ‘Monster of the Week’ and give it a Pokémon twist.

‘Pocket Monster of the Week’ was born.

Return to Dark Tower

For an age, the tower lay in ruins. Unbeknownst to the people of the realm, a great evil stirred in its bowels. It started with strange sightings: a flock of crows flying in circles until they dropped from the sky, the lake frozen solid in the height of summer. In time, they could not deny that which they most feared.

The evil had not been vanquished. The darkness would soon fall again. The tower will rise.

A “sequel” to the 1981 grail game, Return to Dark Tower is a game for 1-4 players who take the role of heroes.

Together, they gather resources, cleanse buildings, defeat monsters, and undertake quests to build up their strength and discern what foe ultimately awaits them.

When the heroes face the tower, the game shifts into its dramatic second act, where the players have one chance to defeat the enemy once and for all.

The game features both cooperative and competitive modes of play.

The game features traditional game mechanisms, such as engine building and resource management, paired with a technological interface unlike any seen before in games, including the titular tower, which holds more than a few secrets.

Scythe

Scythe is an engine-building, asymmetric, competitive board game set in an alternate-history 1920s period. It is a time of farming and war, broken hearts and rusted gears, innovation and valor. It plays 1-5 players in about 115 minutes, and it features art & worldbuilding by the acclaimed Jakub Rozalski.

It is a time of unrest in 1920s Europa. The ashes from the first great war still darken the snow. The capitalistic city-state known simply as “The Factory,” which fueled the war with heavily armored mechs, has closed its doors, drawing the attention of several nearby countries.

Players represent fallen leaders attempting to restore their honor and lead their faction to power in Eastern Europa. Players conquer territory, enlist new recruits, reap resources, gain villagers, build structures, and activate monstrous mechs.

Each player begins the game with different resources (strength, victory points, movement capabilities, and popularity), their choice of several faction-specific abilities, and a hidden goal. Starting positions are specially calibrated to contribute to each faction’s uniqueness and the asymmetrical nature of the game.

Scythe gives players almost complete control over their fate. Other than each player’s individual hidden objective cards, the only elements of luck are encounter cards that players will draw as they interact with the citizens of newly explored lands and combat cards that give you a temporary boost in combat. Combat is also driven by choices, not luck or randomness.

Triune RPG

Triune is a science fiction roleplaying game designed by WJ MacGuffin. Set a few hundred years from now, humanity still hasn’t discovered any aliens; instead, we have discovered Heaven and Hell.

While attempting to enter the theoretical hyperspace to allow much faster travel between planets, humans opened gates to two other universes. One calls itself Heaven and the other Hell. These two universes are at war. Angels and devils wanted humans to join their side in war against the other, but most humans choose neutrality. Thus began the Trinity War - a war within the Universe of Man between man, angel, and devil over which side humanity would take. The war ended with the Treaty, which states that humanity shall remain neutral and Heaven and Hell will leave humanity alone.

Ever since gates to the other universes opened, prayers of the truly devout began to have obvious, measurable effects in reality: healing wounds, causing plagues, revealing truths, destroying objects, and more. No government wants their citizens being able to change reality through prayer, so humanity passed the Reality Protection Act, commonly called the Anti-Church Act, that made all religion and worship illegal. The six major faiths of the time (Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Chungism) were banned, their churches and temples demolished, their holy books burned, and their followers forced to renounce their faith or be arrested.

In the rpg, players take roles as enforcers: a cross between police and military who investigate angels and devils in our universe - and their human allies. Enforcers travel all over the settled worlds of humanity, following clues and fighting those who would betray us. Unfortunately, that could be yourself. Player-characters can secretly work for Heaven or Hell, gaining powerful Prayers and working against the very cases they are sent to solve.

Triune has some innovative concepts such as:

The Effort System, a strategic d10 mechanic that allows players to decide how much effort their character puts into an action. You control how much risk and reward are on the line with every die roll!
The Weave, an internet-like system that lets characters pull gear out of thin air. No more cursing over not having the exact equipment needed for an adventure!
No character death! You can die and return to the action - with a price.
Faiths as character classes. Not only can you play a level 4 Buddhist, but all characters have three classes: one for Heaven, one for Hell, and one for the Hegemony. Characters are multifaceted, conflicted, and even hypocritical just as in real life!
Change the Universe! All societies are numerically rated in their faith in Heaven, Hell, and Hegemony. During the game, you have a chance to alter those ratings and push society towards the side you want. Your play affects the setting!
