Join us for an informal meet & greet/hangout with a bunch of MisCon's writers and editors. This isn't a formal panel with panelists up on the stage discussing a topic. Instead, everyone will grab chairs in the pavilion, and the moderator will get things going. Then we'll open things up so small group hangouts can happen until the end of the hour. This is your chance to informally meet a bunch of the people you'll see on panels all weekend.

  • Break Fri 3:50 - Fri 6:00
  • panel Fri 6:00 - 6:50 PM, All About Story Extras, Dragon Pavilion (1)
Moderator: Eva Elasigue; Panelists: Stan! Brown, Eva Elasigue, Ann Gimpel, Jeff Grubb

Lots of books and series come with additional materials - an appendix, maps, timelines, family trees, and more. How are these made? How is this information compiled, communicated, and created for the reader, in collaboration or by the author?

  • Break Fri 6:50 - Sat 2:00
  • moderator Sat 2:00 - 2:50 PM, Launching an Indie Career: Year 2, Monster Tent (2)
Moderator: Ann Gimpel; Panelists: Katie Cross, Ann Gimpel, GS Jennsen, Frog Jones

All I need is a book, right? Not exactly. The better you plan ahead of time, the more likely you are to succeed. Establishing visibility in a veritable sea of competition is a challenge. Nothing guarantees success, but you can definitely tweak your odds. This panel will provide strategies to rise above the crowd.

  • panel Sat 3:00 - 3:50 PM, Appreciation vs. Appropriation, Monster Tent (2)
Moderator: Manny Frishberg; Panelists: Manny Frishberg, Ann Gimpel, Lynsey Griswold, Gwendolyn Nix

Our own voices deserve to be heard, and people, especially underrepresented people should get to tell their own stories. But does that mean we can only write about characters that look like us and have the same background? Taken to a logical extreme, can men ever write authentic female characters? Where are the lines when it comes to "writing the other?" When does the folk process become cultural theft or exploitation?

  • Break Sat 3:50 - Sun 11:00
  • moderator Sun 11:00 - 11:50 AM, Help! My Books Aren't Selling, Nameless Ballroom
Moderator: Ann Gimpel; Panelists: Ann Gimpel, Joseph Malik, Dave Smeds

This panel will help pinpoint why your books are lying around like beached whales. Its focus will be on the big three: cover, blurb, sample. All must be spot on and genre specific, otherwise no one will even click through to your "look inside" sample. This is a tough, competitive business. Not a place to reinvent the wheel.

  • Break Sun 11:50 - Sun 1:00
  • panel Sun 1:00 - 1:50 PM, The Business Side of Independent Publishing, Monster Tent (2)
Moderator: Frog Jones; Panelists: Katie Cross, Ann Gimpel, Frog Jones, Joseph Malik

Our panelists will discuss the business of independent publishing.

  • moderator Sun 2:00 - 2:50 PM, Inciting Incidents: Does Your Story Have a Hook?, Phoenix Ballroom
Moderator: Ann Gimpel; Panelists: Ann Gimpel, Esther Jones, Tod McCoy, Dakota Nyght

Readers often decide whether to keep reading or put down a book within the first 5 to 10 pages—they're looking for where the action starts! Let's talk about what an inciting incident is (and isn't) and how to make it stronger.

  • Break Sun 2:50 - Sun 4:00
  • panel Sun 4:00 - 4:50 PM, Indie Publishing: Why and How?, Monster Tent (2)
Moderator: Krista Wallace; Panelists: Ann Gimpel, Theresa Miller, Krista Wallace

What are the differences between indie and traditional publishing? Why did I (and so many others) choose the indie route? What are some common misconceptions? And is there room for all of us? (hint: the answer is Yes).

  • Break Sun 4:50 - Mon 1:00
  • panel Mon 1:00 - 1:50 PM, Creating Audio Books, The Hollow
Panelists: C E Chester, Ann Gimpel
