Missoula's Science Fiction & Fantasy Convention

MisCon 38: the Dark Forest, May 24 - 27, 2024 Missoula, Montana

JM Landels (Jen)

MisCon 38 Attending Professional

In addition to her work as a writer, editor, artist, and publisher, JM Landels teaches swordplay and riding - sometimes both at the same time - in Langley, BC. She draws on this experience, as well as her time as a rock musician and childbirth educator, to inform her bestselling fantasy trilogy, Allaigna's Song. She is currently working on a new series, La Bergère, featuring a shepherdess-turned-spy in seventeenth-century France.

JM Landels is the author of the bestselling Allaigna's Song trilogy, as well The Shepherdess series. She is also the Editor-in-Chief and Art Director of Pulp Literature and the head of Academie Cavallo School of Mounted Combat in Langley BC.

A freelance editor since 2003, in 2014 Jen co-founded Pulp Literature Press along with her partners-in-crime Mel Anastasiou and Susan Pieters. As an editor, Jen's focus is on developmental and line edits, helping writers tighten and polish their prose and dialogue. She delights in a well-crafted sentence that delivers an emotional punch.

When she doesn't have her writer/editor hat on, she can be found teaching riding or swordplay on her farm in Langley, BC. She's been practising historic swordplay with rapier, dagger, longsword, and polearms since 2007, and she's been riding since before she could walk. She founded Academie Duello's Mounted Combat program in 2010, and her own school dedicated to historic equestrian arts, Academie Cavallo, in 2020.

Her past antics include studying comic art under David Lloyd at the Cartoon Centre in London UK, teaching childbirth and supporting labouring women with the Lower Mainland Childbearing Society, and, as Venus Lovedoll, heading up a number of Indie/Punk/Metal bands in London and Vancouver, the last of which was Stiff Bunnies.

This is your chance to informally meet a bunch of the people you'll see on panels all weekend.

  • panel Fri 4:00 - 4:50 PM, David vs Goliath: Writing the Mismatched Fight Scene, The Hollow
    Panelists: JM Landels (Jen)

Everyone loves an underdog. Having the little guy triumph gets your audience cheering along, but how do you make the reader believe it when your 90 lb weakling takes down the musclebound bully, or your wee slip of a girl lays out an armoured knight, a gang of street thugs? Author/editor JM Landels brings her years of sword fighting and martial arts (mostly against larger opponents) to the writing table to demonstrate techniques that actually work.

What does a hapless character lost in the wilderness need to survive? How do climate, weather, and terrain affect movement, navigation, combat, and survival odds. What happens when you throw in dependents, mounts, or wild animals?

  • Break Sat 5:50 - Sun 10:00
  • moderator Sun 10:00 - 10:50 AM, Don’t Kill The Dog!, Monster Tent (2)
Moderator: JM Landels (Jen); Panelists: Deby Fredericks, Esther Jones, JM Landels (Jen), Danica Winters

Animals have been used and misused by writers for centuries: as ways to progress the plot, induce pathos, get a character from point A to point B, and as characters in their own right. Panelists will give examples of stories in which the use of animals either works or doesn't work, and will discuss how to avoid making your readers throw a book across the room in fury.

  • moderator Sun 11:00 - 12:50 PM, Writing Workshop: The Hour Stories, Fairy Tent (4)
Moderator: JM Landels (Jen); Panelists: Brenda Carre, JM Landels (Jen)

A writing circle can be one of the most positive and powerful sources of feedback and encouragement in the otherwise solitary occupation of writing. Using "The Hour Stories" created by Dale Adams Segal, you will generate approximately 1000 words of either a new story or a section of your work-in-progress. The Hour Story cards are excellent tools to promote deeper insight, unstick a writing block, or take your story in a new and exciting direction.
