Join us for an informal meet & greet/hangout with a bunch of MisCon's writers and editors. This isn't a formal panel with panelists up on the stage discussing a topic. Instead, everyone will grab chairs in the pavilion, and the moderator will get things going. Then we'll open things up so small group hangouts can happen until the end of the hour. This is your chance to informally meet a bunch of the people you'll see on panels all weekend.

  • Break Fri 3:50 - Sat 3:00
  • panel Sat 3:00 - 3:50 PM, Dark Forests of Myth and Lore, Rocket Tent (3)
Moderator: William Parrish; Panelists: M. H. Bonham (Maggie), Laramie Dean, Valerie Guyant, Walter Wiese

Dark Forests permeate every culture's folklore and mythology. Join us as we take a look at versions and motifs from a global perspective. Lets discuss how writers, artists, and other creatives enter these woods respectfully.

  • Break Sat 3:50 - Sun 11:00
  • moderator Sun 11:00 - 11:50 AM, Character Limitations & Creativity, Phoenix Ballroom
Moderator: Walter Wiese; Panelists: Kevin Kauffmann, Gwendolyn Nix, Walter Wiese

Constraints can foster creativity. Our panelists will discuss interesting limitations they've placed on their characters that resulted in good stories, as well as examples of limitations in other works.
(Note that we're not talking about character disability here, which would fit into this topic but is a narrower and more-fraught concern.)

  • Break Sun 11:50 - Sun 5:00
  • panel Sun 5:00 - 5:50 PM, The Dark Forest Hypothesis & You, Dragon Pavilion (1)
Moderator: Manny Frishberg; Panelists: Manny Frishberg, GS Jennsen, Jani Rounds, Walter Wiese

The "dark forest hypothesis" states that since space is such a dark, dangerous place, alien species deliberately hide themselves to avoid detection. What other ecosystems can be dark? Dark swamp? Dark Desert? Dark Tundra? What makes an ecosystem dark? The Dark Forest itself is no longer the menace that it used to be. Where would Hansel and Gretel get lost now?
