MisCon 40 Theme

The Upside Down

I'm not sure when the Goblin King showed up, or how he got his hands on that old copy of the NeverEnding Story. He keeps muttering about voodoo, magic dances, hypercolor shirts, the Nothingness, and Biff Tannen.

Our seers, scientists, and sages don't know what he's up to, but at least he's stealing books instead of babies these days.

Who is Q Bert? Can we trust Madmartigan? The Dread Pirate Roberts? Those Goonies kids?

Chunk is funny, but I'm not so sure about the truffle shuffle.

How do we close the portals? Are the goblins and gremlins cooperating or competing? Are they working for Lo Pan? Bowser? Skeletor? Queen Bavmorda? Shredder?

So many questions, so few answers.

That government lab seems pretty suspicious, though, and a lot of 8-bit creatures have been creeping out of its sewers.

Of course Venkman, She Ra, and Hopper want to charge right in, proton packs ready, but Vizzini thinks we should carefully track down the Demogorgon, find the Mind Flayer, then send in Eleven and the turtles.

He could be wrong, but everyone knows you should never bet against a Sicilian when death is on the line.

Until we can close the portals, at least some of the stranger things are trying to help. Mario is gathering mushrooms, and Pac Man keeps eating most of the ghosts.

Sarah Connor and Jack Burton had a pool party and fed those mogwai after midnight, so now the A Team is trying to round up all the Gremlins.

Luckily, Ellen Ripley showed up, so things are looking better.

Could we lose? Inconceivable!

Over the years, MisCon has been plagued by zombies, became a ruined wasteland, ascended to the future, lost all its heroes, and leveled up. It’s been filled with doors to many times and places. Once it became a fairy tale that attracted none other than George R.R. Martin, one of the greatest wizards of our age.

For our 40th Anniversary, let's return to the era when MisCon was born: the 1980s.

While you're working on costumes, panel ideas, and game scenarios, think about the iconic shows, movies, songs, and games of the 80s that spawned the modern classic, Stranger Things.

To get in the mood, maybe watch Willow, Goonies, Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Labyrinth, Big Trouble in Little China, and play some old school Zelda, Super Mario, and Final Fantasy.

What about Spaceballs, Predator, Terminator, Back to the Future, TMNT, NeverEnding Story, and Akira?

So next June, to keep away the Nothingness, grab a fireflower, a can of new Coke, and join us for MisCon 40: the Upside Down.

Theme Notes

Our theme changes every year. The yearly theme influences panel topics, invited guests, decoration, and sometimes convention-wide events. We encourage guests, members, and attendees to take each year's theme to heart, and let it influence your thoughts of, and preparation for, MisCon each year.
