Cosplay Is Not Consent
Cosplay is Not Consent!
Cosplay is not consent! Dressing up is a fantastically fun activity to do at a convention. It can be exciting to see someone cosplaying as your favorite character and it can be easy to get too carried away. You have to remember though, there are real people in those costumes and it’s important to maintain boundaries.
- Do not touch cosplayers without consent. We know their cosplay looks amazing! Please ask before touching costumes, giving hugs, etc. Give the cosplayer their space and your respect when they say no.
- Ask before taking photos, yes every time. Getting your picture taken is a big deal, and not for everybody. Cosplayers want to look their best for photos and most will pose if asked. However, if a cosplayer is busy participating in a panel, eating, or resting, take a second to think if this is the best time to ask for photos. Most likely not! Also keep in mind photos aren’t for everybody and some cosplayers just don’t want any taken. In all scenarios it is imperative to ask first and accept the answer you are given.
- Remember Cosplayers are regular people. Conventions can be crowded and stressful which can make socializing difficult. Not everyone is ready or ok with role-playing/being in character. Not everyone is prepared to have intense debates/conversation regarding their character/cosplay. It’s ok to strike up a conversation but don’t feel bad if the cosplayer does not reciprocate or has to excuse themselves. COSPLAYERS ARE REAL PEOPLE!
Cosplaying at a convention is a lot of fun and it’s fun to interact with cosplayers! Remember to treat the cosplayers with the same respect and courtesy you’d treat plain clothes attendees. Always ask permission before touching or taking photos and don’t be upset if they can’t interact at that moment.
Keep MisCon fun and safe for everyone!
