Cosplay Chess Returns!

We’re excited for the return of Cosplay Chess. It’s bigger and more accessible than ever!

We’ve redesigned our setup so that it is wheelchair and crutch friendly. Plus the board itself is bigger so you don’t have to worry about your costume invading your board neighbor’s space!

Run Down

Cosplay chess is both human chess and a performance!

The moves are all pre-scripted but don’t worry the Kings have the moves in front of them and they will instruct players where to go.

The board is a typical Chessboard. Columns are A-H and rows are 1-8.

Our board will have every square marked.

When one piece ‘takes’ another they will navigate to the ‘fight lane’ which is a padded lane (think fencing lane). This is where the stage combat will be. It is padded but we ask participants to be smart and be safe. If you’ve never done a barrel roll before, now is not the time to test it out. You will have time in the pre-meet to choreograph a fight with your scene partner.

Everyone not in the fight will crouch or sit on the board to give a clear view of the fighters.

Fights should be no longer than 60 seconds and the piece that was instructed to ‘take’ the other piece will be the winner. If you are the piece that is being ‘taken’ please remember to admit defeat. Make it fun! ‘Dying’ can be more fun than the rest  of the game combined!

Once the fight is over the winning piece will return to the board and the game will continue.

This goes on until the game is done!

Notable Points:

1. Chess is where wigs and props come to die. If it’s special, leave it off the board.

2. NO HEELS ON THE BOARD. It’s very expensive and we love it dearly. We’ve put a lot of time into making an accessible board so we want to preserve it as long as possible. Only flat soled shoes will be accepted. Feet must be covered for hygiene reasons

3. No physical contact. We want to respect everyone’s personal bubbles, costumes, and props!

4. In general be respectful of your Kings and fellow players. We’re here to have fun and are doing our best!
